Creating a Character
- Pick a race between Earth Pony, Pegasus, or Unicorn
- Note down the Racial Talent of that race
- Write a backstory for your character
- Choose a Cutie Mark Talent (if your character has their CM)
- Pick one free Bonus talent
- Your base stats are Body 4d6, Mind 4d6, Charm 6d6.
- Choose either Body or Mind to gain a free extra level on.
For items and bits, you start out with whatever your DM deems appropriate. The rest depends on your DM. You can have a more in-depth backstory, character quirks, and a personal goals for your character, which the DM can use in planning future adventures.
Ranks
This system uses Ranks rather than the standard level system seen in most TTRPGs. A player generally needs not think about Ranks. Ranks are mostly to help the DM to pick suitable encounters for the party.
A player character's Rank is determined by how many experience points have been *spent* to upgrade their stats and talents (see fig. 1). Earned but unspent points do not count towards Rank, regardless of how much you have. You can even choose to not spend experience points at all and remain at Rank 1 with your low-level Stats and Talents if you prefer a more depraved run.
fig. 1:
Experience Spent | Rank |
0-10 | 1 |
11-20 | 2 |
21-35 | 3 |
36-55 | 4 |
56-80 | 5 |
81-110 | 6 |
111-145 | 7 |
146-185 | 8 |
186-240 | 9 |
241-300 | 10 |
Note: Keep note of how much the party total has, and how much you’ve spent.
Earning Experience Points
Experience points are rewarded for players when their characters have done something remarkable, but the DM is free to handle this however they like. Typically experience points are given after the session, and spent before the next session starts. Here are some things for which the DM may reward your character:
- When you diffuse a tense situation between ponies.
- When you beat up a monster.
- When you complete a quest.
- When you explore somewhere new.
- When the party shows great acts of friendship.
Spending Experience Points
You can use your earned Experience Points to upgrade your Stats and Talents however you like. Here are some things to keep in mind:
- Higher tiers cost more than lower tiers, so the more you specialise in one ability, the more your character's other abilities will lag behind.
- Your initial Stat and Talent levels are free. You only pay for the additional levels.
- Leveling up Talents costs significantly less than Stats, especially at higher levels. The drawback is that Talents can be used in fewer situations than Stats.
- Your character can have up to 10 Extra Talents in addition to their Racial, Cutie Mark, and Bonus Talents. They have a special Experience Point cost to unlock, which increases with every additional Extra Talents you already have.
